迎接新學年，香港科技大學（科大）今日（九月二日）起舉行為期兩天的開學嘉年華「Fire Up Your Year」，校長葉玉如教授聯同一眾副校長及管理層出席，與新生大玩問答遊戲，陪伴他們開啟人生的新篇章！為培養新成員對大學之歸屬感，學生不但甫進校園便能聽到科大校歌的悠揚旋律，校長及副校長們更帶領新生合唱，與學生打成一片，以歌聲凝聚大學社群。 葉校長在致辭中勉勵同學們，在科大的生活不僅要專注學業，更要享受探索的過程。她亦鼓勵同學要勇於發掘自己的興趣和潛能，建立長久的友誼，秉持科大「凡事皆可為」的精神，並充分享受這段成長的旅程。她又指出：「對新生而言，初到科大難免要花時間適應新的學習模式和環境，但我們隨時都會在身邊支持你們！」 此外，主辦嘉年華的環球事務及傳訊處、學務長辦公室及逸夫演藝中心更邀請一眾科大師兄、師姐為新生進行樂隊演出、無伴奏合唱、花式跳繩、啦啦隊及跳舞表演，並於校園各處設置攤位遊戲，增進同學對校園設施的認識，場面樂也融融。

A collaborative research team led by Prof. Junwei Liu, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and Prof Jinfeng Jia and Prof Yaoyi Li from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), has identified the world’s first multiple Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in a single vortex of the superconducting topological crystalline insulator SnTe and exploited crystal symmetry to control the coupling between the MZMs. This discovery offers a new pathway to realizing fault-tolerant quantum computers, which is published in Nature*.

A high-level delegation led by the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Prof. Nancy IP paid a visit to Jiangsu Province this week with 20 HKUST DeepTech start-ups to showcase the University’s innovations and entrepreneurial achievements. During the trip, the start-ups explored potential business partnerships with over 100 local enterprises, and HKUST signed a cooperation agreement with the Wuxi Economic Development Zone (Wuxi EDZ) to jointly promote innovation and start-up incubation, fostering deeper collaboration among industry, academic and research sectors between Hong Kong and Jiangsu.

It was another typical day in this summer holiday. The sea along the Clear Water Bay was shimmering in the morning sunlight, and student sailor Maddalena Di SALVO – or “Maddy” as her friends affectionately call her – was ready to begin hours-long training with her coach and teammate. Travelling westward to Tin Shui Wai, student Joseph CHU poured his heart and soul into upgrading his invention at his high school’s laboratory – a hands-free tracking shopping cart designed for the elderly living in Hong Kong’s neighborhoods.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the establishment of the HKUST Institute for Financial Research (the Institute), with a mission to address the multi-faceted social and economic issues through financial research and technological innovation, in collaboration with the academia, industry practitioners and policymakers in Hong Kong and beyond. 

Researchers at the School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have developed an eco-friendly refrigeration device with record-breaking cooling performance in the world, setting to transform industries reliant on cooling and reduce global energy use. With a boost in efficiency of over 48%, the new elastocaloric cooling technology opens a promising avenue for accelerating the commercialization of this disruptive technology and addressing the environmental challenges associated with traditional cooling systems.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 2024 AUA-HKUST Overseas Study Program Entrepreneurship Bootcamp from July 2 – 8, 2024. The 7-day program brought together 44 aspiring students from 14 universities across Asia at HKUST campus. Organized by HKUST's Entrepreneurship Center, the comprehensive program provided participants with invaluable insights into Hong Kong's thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, essential pitching skills, and practical guidance on launching startups. Through a week-long program of hands-on activities including design thinking, market research, business planning, financial management, real-world business case studies and networking, the Bootcamp equipped students with critical skills for launching a startup and becoming capable and innovative business leaders in future.
