HKUST Launches First Air Quality Research Supersite for Real-time Characterization
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launches the first Air Quality Research Supersite to enhance air quality research and to tackle air pollution problems in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. With a HK$9 million Special Equipment Grant from the University Grants Committee and a HK$6 million grant from the Environmental Conservation Fund, the Supersite enables real-time characterization of ambient particulate matter (PM) in the air to strengthen understanding of the nature and sources of fine particles.

HKUST's First Research Excellence Awards Honor Engineering Achievements
As a world-class university dedicated to research and education, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is always proud of its top-notch faculty’s contribution. To recognize the faculty’s devotion and outstanding achievements, the School of Engineering has established new research excellence awards in 2011, for the first time. They are Distinguished Research Excellence Award, Research Excellence Award and The Young Investigator Research Award. They will be given on an annual basis.

HKUST Holds Asia's First Carbon-neutral Congregation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently held the first carbon-neutral university congregation in Asia.A post-event carbon audit has shown that HKUST’s 2010 Congregation, held over three days from 10 to 12 November at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium on campus, achieved carbon neutrality based on British Standards Institution’s PAS 2060 protocol.The environmental measures on carbon reduction taken include providing additional recycling bins, composting used cups and plates, providing a carbon-friendly menu, as well as using recycled paper and environmentally friendly ink for printing the congregation program.A meaningful start, a pledge to improve

HKUST Develops World's First Smart Anti-microbial Coating to Control Infectious Diseases
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the successful development of a smart anti-microbial coating that has the longest-lasting effect against the widest range of microbes."This revolutionary coating will set a new standard in the maintenance of public health, as it is easy to apply, safe to use, fast and effective in killing a wide spectrum of microbes, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly," said Prof King-Lun Yeung of HKUST's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

HKUST Unmanned Helicopter Makes World's First Autonomous Flight to Mount Everest
An unmanned miniature helicopter developed by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has made the world's first autonomous flight to Mount Everest, setting a milestone both in the history of unmanned aviation and in the surveying and protection of high altitude environments.This was part of a series of test flights carried out over a 10-day period in mid June this year by Prof Zexiang Li of HKUST's Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, assisted by his postgraduate student Mr Frank Wang.The flights covered various spots in the Tibetan Highland, including Mount Everest, lakes, a glacier, and a maiden forest."The biggest challenge of these test flights is the extreme climatic conditions in the high altitudes, particularly the thin air and the exceptionally strong and gusty winds," said Prof Li.

HKUST Launches Hong Kong's First Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project (Chinese Only)
香港科技大學(科大)獲得民政事務局局長法團轄下的粵劇發展基金資助20萬元,推出為期一年的粵劇推廣計劃,提高全港大專學生及教職員對粵劇的認識和欣賞,並為社區人士提供粵劇節目及場地。這是本港首個惠及全港大專院校的粵劇推廣計劃。「這計劃既可以弘揚國粹,又可以服務社群。」科大學生事務處處長區嘉麗博士說。「科大一向著重全人發展,除了提供高水平的科技和商學教育及研究外,也很著重培養文化欣賞和創作。我們非常感謝政府大力支持。」她說。「大專粵劇推廣計劃」主要包括四類活動:工作坊、示範講座、粵劇演出及攝影比賽。工作坊會教授基本做手身段及排演折子戲,劇目包括「鳳閣恩仇未了情」、「帝女花之香夭」及「紫釵記之拾釵」。課程完成後,更會舉辦結業演出。二零零八年九月二十六日截止報名。示範講座將會舉辦兩次,題目分別為「粵劇做手身段示範」以及「粵劇武場及鑼鼓示範」。演出方面,科大會提供藝術表演場地給予校外業餘粵劇團體作公開演出,也會安排學員義務到醫院及老人院等表演折子戲。此外,配合今年十一月份全港「粵劇日」大型活動,科大會舉辦大專攝影比賽,優勝作品將於科大校園展出。「大專粵劇推廣計劃」開幕禮暨「粵劇做手身段示範講座」將於十月十日下午一時正於科大舉行,歡迎各界人士蒞臨參加。主禮嘉賓包括「粵劇發展諮詢委員會」及「粵劇發展基金執行委員會」主席周振基博士、香港八和會館主席汪明荃小姐、粵劇紅伶羅家英先生及科大首席副校長錢大康教授。示範表演嘉賓為鄭詠梅小姐及洪海先生。

HKUST Hosts First UK-Hong Kong Frontiers of Science Symposium
HKUST is hosting Hong Kong’s first Frontiers of Science Symposium jointly sponsored by the Royal Society of Britain and the Croucher Foundation, covering key research areas such as stem cell research and infectious diseases.The conference organizers invited 70 of the best and brightest young scientists from the UK and from local universities for three days (16-18 January) of scientific dialogue and discussions.The Frontiers of Science is an important platform for bilateral sharing of major scientific ideas and techniques between countries, cities or regions. The US and the UK have each organized a series of such bilateral conferences with other countries or regions in recent years.

HKUST Hosts the first International Conference on Information and Learning Commons in Hong Kong
International library and learning support experts from more than 10 countries attended an International Conference on Information and Learning Commons hosted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the first of its kind in the territory.The 2-day Conference, started today (Monday 10 December) at HKUST’s Lee Wing Tat Lecture Theatre, was held to mark the anniversary of launching Information Commons by HKUST’s Lee Shau Kee Library.Integrating reference services and technical support, the Information Commons aims to foster continued learning outside the classroom. It provides students and faculty with a creative, flexible, technology-rich environment to use electronic information resources effectively, to experiment with new information technology, and to enhance collaborative learning and group presentations. Library users, especially students, have responded enthusiastically to the service since its introduction last fall.
