This is a foreword written for our BSc Global China Studies students for the inauguration of their society on April 10, 2012, and I'm sharing it with you all here, with joy and pride: What is the role of humanities and social science in a university and, furthermore, what is the role of a university in society? I used to think, a university was the beacon of intellectual knowledge and inquiry that inspires us to try to answer the query of human existence from all aspects. I used to believe, and I still believe, we are first and foremost human and social beings, and a university has the primary responsibility to teach students how to relate to themselves and others as human and social beings. It should take on a leadership role in society in “bettering society for a better humanity.”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a five-million-dollar donation from Dr Simon Kwok and Dr Eleanor Kwok for the development of bio-devices for treatment of endoluminal diseases. These groundbreaking inventions, developed with an aim to improving stroke treatments, are the fruits of close collaboration between leading neurosurgeons and the engineering faculty at HKUST. The successful collaboration points a new way forward for the medical practitioners and the engineering academics to collaboratively develop frontier medical technologies in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today conferred Honorary Fellowships on three distinguished individuals in recognition of their contributions to the University and the community. Dr the Honorable Marvin K T Cheung, Council Chairman of HKUST, and Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST officiated at the Presentation Ceremony. The recipients of the 2012 Honorary Fellowships are: Dr Andrew Chan Ka-ching, Mr Herbert S Cheng, Jr and Prof Laurence C Franklin. Their brief biographies are set out below:

Established by the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST), HKUST NIE Social Media Laboratory officially opens today. As Asia's first research laboratory specializing in the study of social media culture and technologies, HKUST NIE Social Media Laboratory will bring academic and commercial significance to the development and application of social media in the region.

Thammasat University from Thailand took home the championship for the Citi International Case Competition 2011 with an innovative long-term growth strategy for one of the world's busiest independent container terminal operators. The university defeated 19 other outstanding teams from top business schools around the world to take the highest honor in the prestigious annual contest.

In view of the 3-3-4 education reform in Hong Kong, HKUST's Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching and the Hong Kong branch of the Higher Education Research and Development Society in Australasia (HERDSA) co-organized the first local symposium on "Engaging Undergraduates in Research and Inquiry: A Scholarly Dialogue" to promote the creation of knowledge in undergraduate education. Over 70 teaching staff from nine local post-secondary institutions gathered together at HKUST, where faculty members from local universities shared their experience in developing undergraduate research and inquiry-based learning approaches. Prof Mick Healey, a well-known higher education consultant and researcher from the UK, gave an introductory address on "The Nature and Development of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry: Mapping the Territory" to share his insights on advancing undergraduate research and inquiry to promote student learning.

World Class Tests in Mathematics and Problem Solving administered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have found that the highest achievers are those who do well in reasoning and problem solving. This observation was made based on the results of 3,028 students who took part in the November 2010 World Class Tests for the 8-11 age group and the 12-14 age group. These include students from 176 primary schools and 91 secondary schools. Prof Wong Man-Yu of the HKUST Mathematics Department said, "Judging from the performance of Hong Kong students over the years, we have observed that they are in general well trained in finding the right answers, but on the other hand they are relatively weak in explaining their reasoning process. We found that the candidates who do well in explaining the reasoning process also do well in both the Mathematics and Problem Solving."
