The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) presented today (18 September) The Shaw Prize Lecture in Life Science & Medicine 2012 featuring the distinguished recipients of this year’s Shaw Prize in Life Science & Medicine, Prof Arthur L Horwich and Prof Franz-Ulrich Hartl. Some 400 participants including HKUST students, faculty, alumni, as well as experts from research institutes, industry, secondary school students and the public were impressed by the inspiring lectures.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted its second-ever Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS-HK), with 16 undergraduates from the US and Hong Kong coming under the tutelage of university faculty and industry professionals to apply mathematical theories and computational skills to a wide palette of real-life problems proposed by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Huawei, MetLife and BGI.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the recipients of the School of Engineering (SENG) Research Excellence Awards 2012. The recipients are outstanding scholars who have made significant discoveries at the forefront of engineering research. The annual SENG Research Excellence Awards were launched in 2011 to recognize the impact and contributions of the School’s faculty members. The awards are classified into three types to encompass faculty members who are in different stages of their academic life. The School currently has about 160 faculty members across its six departments.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, MICEX and RTS: RUALR), the world’s largest aluminum producer, hosted the UC RUSAL President’s Forum today on ‘Making a Difference, a Stitch at a Time’ featuring Ms Marjorie Yang, Chairman of Esquel Group and one of Fortune’s Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business. Ms Yang shared insights regarding how a traditional industry could become a catalyst for societal change. Despite many civilizations having evolved from patriarchal philosophies, the role of modern women has significantly changed in recent decades. Successful women have brought fundamental changes to the world, whether in the political or global economic spheres or other international fronts. Thus, women have now become a major force in shaping today’s society. UC RUSAL and HKUST have invited Ms Marjorie Yang to share her story of success.

As a world-class research university, HKUST has long been proactive in strengthening its teaching and research facilities so as to create a stimulating academic environment necessary for the fostering of excellence in research and the nurturing top talents.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the Kick-off Ceremony for HKUST Green Ambassador Program Exhibition today, the effort of South African- and Taiwan-bound student Green Ambassadors in engaging texts and images to promote heightened ecological awareness. A long-time advocate for environmental protection, HKUST has put sustainability in practice in a wide range of areas and made e-month an annual event. This year, the e-month falls on March and is themed on ecology protection, encompassing a variety of activities such as workshops, local eco-tours, green trades etc. The activities shine a light from different angles on the significance of sustainable development, in hopes of driving greater participation in green life. The HKUST Green Ambassador Program is one of e-month’s highlights.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its third Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony honoring faculty and staff members who have served the University for 20 years. HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose hard work and dedication have contributed to the University’s rapid rise in the past two decades. This year, HKUST is presenting the Award to 237 members who joined the University in 1992. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, Provost Prof Wei Shyy, Vice-President for Administration and Business Prof Yuk-shan Wong and Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee joined the deans, heads of departments and units in the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University. About 400 persons shared the joy at the celebration.
