Prof. Angela WU, Associate Professor in the Division of Life Science and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been named a 2025 Schmidt Polymath, a prestigious recognition celebrating transformative research across disciplines. 

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today conferred Honorary Fellowships upon six distinguished individuals: Ms. Cally CHAN Shan-Shan, Mr. Vincent CHEUNG Sai-Sing, Prof. MAK Kin Fai, Dr. Frank TONG Fuk-Kay, Prof. David WANG Der-Wei, and Dr. ZHOU Lidong (listed in alphabetical order by surname). The ceremony was officiated by Prof. Harry SHUM, Chairman of the HKUST Council, and Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST.

The President of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Prof. Nancy IP, welcomed the 2025 Policy Address delivered by the Chief Executive, Mr. John LEE, today. She expressed great enthusiasm by its forward-looking initiatives and strategic blueprint. President Prof. Ip particularly highlighted key measures such as accelerating the development of the Northern Metropolis, enhancing the strategic layout of innovation and technology infrastructure, boosting the integrated development of education, technology and talents, as well as promoting the "Study in Hong Kong" brand. She emphasized that these initiatives are not only pivotal in reinvigorating Hong Kong’s long-term development but also serve as crucial strategies to drive economic upgrading and transformation, and to expand the top-tier talent pool.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Fudan University today announced a significant expansion of their strategic partnership aimed at establishing a global academic exchange and innovation hub in new engineering disciplines. The enhanced collaboration was unveiled at the inaugural Xianghui International Frontiers Forum, held at HKUST’s Clear Water Bay Campus. The event brought together over 200 top scientists, young scholars, and institutional leaders from nearly 10 countries and regions. A key highlight was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on academic exchange and talent cultivation between Fudan University’s Xianghui Institute and the College of Smart Materials and Future Energy, and HKUST’s School of Engineering.

A high-level delegation from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), led by President Prof. Nancy IP, has successfully concluded a strategic visit to Sweden, forging deeper partnerships with the country’s leading academic and research institutions. The visit reinforced Hong Kong’s role as a vital bridge for scientific and technological collaboration between Sweden and China, with a focus on advancing innovation in fields such as life sciences, HealthTech, ageing, energy, robotics, and sustainability.

Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) is pleased to announce today (September 12) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a consortium of French companies, including Schneider Electric, Veolia, Bouygues-Dragages, Egis, and Saint-Gobain. This partnership will launch a pioneering low carbon retrofit pilot project, marking a pivotal step toward achieving Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goal by 2050, a goal shared by France.  This MOU stems from the Team France Green Paper on collaboration opportunities to accelerate Hong Kong's path to carbon neutrality by 2050 published in April 2024. This was followed by work on a pilot project proposal for a net zero-carbon building, which was shared with the Chief Executive, Mr. John LEE.

A research team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), led by Professors Gan Jianping (Department of Ocean Science) and Professor Yang Can (Department of Mathematics), has developed a novel AI-powered tool named STIMP for diagnosing coastal ocean productivity and ecosystem health. STIMP introduces a novel paradigm that imputes missing data and then predicts Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations across large spatiotemporal scales. In tests across four representative global coastal regions, STIMP significantly outperformed existing geoscience tools, reducing the mean absolute error (MAE) for imputation by up to 81.39% and for prediction by 58.99%. Accurate Chl-a prediction aids in early detection of harmful algal blooms, ecosystem protection, and provides data-driven insights for evidence-based policy-making.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Sino Group today announced the official launch of the finals for the 15th HKUST-SINO One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition. This milestone anniversary features a record-breaking 348 teams from Hong Kong and 22 other countries and regions across five continents, including Australia, the United States, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Japan, India and Kazakhstan, showcasing the competition’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovative talents and promote collaboration and idea exchanges between local and international entrepreneurs.
