HKUST Unites International Experts in CliMetS Initiative to Tackle Climate Threat of Seabed Methane Seeps
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has successfully launched the Global Climate Impact of Methane Seeps (CliMetS) Initiative through a pivotal collaboration with the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) (GML) and over 200 experts worldwide. Endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Action, CliMetS is dedicated to mapping seabed methane seeps across the world’s oceans and quantifying their impact on global climate systems. Recently, HKUST co-led two milestone workshops in South America and Africa, galvanizing global efforts to address methane seep research gaps and fostering cross-continental partnerships.
A research team led by Prof. QU Jianan, Professor of the HKUST Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of the School of Engineering, has introduced a groundbreaking technique that can capture high-resolution images of the awake mice brain in a near non-invasive manner. The advancement promises deeper insights into human brain function in both healthy and diseased conditions.

A research team from the School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has achieved a major breakthrough in brain imaging by developing the world’s first technology to capture high-resolution images of the brain of awake experimental mice in a nearly non-invasive manner. By eliminating the need for anesthesia, this innovation enables scientists to study brain tissue in its fully functional state. The advancement promises deeper insights into human brain function in both healthy and diseased conditions, opening new frontiers in neuroscience research.

HKUST Launches AI Literacy Hub in Strategic Collaboration with Solomon Learning Group
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today a strategic collaboration with Solomon Learning Group (Solomon Learning) to establish the AI Literacy Hub (the Hub), a major initiative of artificial intelligence education in Hong Kong.The establishment of the Hub responds to the digital education initiatives outlined in The Chief Executive's 2025 Policy Address, and leverages HKUST's strong capabilities in AI teaching and research, along with Solomon Learning's extensive network, to enhance AI literacy throughout the Hong Kong community.The launching ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including Dr. CHOI Yuk-Lin, Secretary for Education of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (via video format); Mr. Antony LEUNG, Chairman and Co-Founder of Solomon Learning; Ms. Alison CHAN, CEO and Co-Founder of Solomon Learning; and Prof. Nancy IP, HKUST President.

HKUST Engineering Researchers Develop High-Performance Quantum Red QR-LEDs to Boost Colour Vividness and Brightness in Displays
A research team led by the School of Engineering of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has made significant advances in quantum rod light-emitting diodes (QR-LEDs), setting record-high efficiency level for red QR-LEDs. This innovation is poised to revolutionize next-generation display and lighting technologies, offering smartphone and television users a vibrant and enhanced visual experience.LEDs have been widely used in electronic products for decades. Recent developments in quantum materials have given rise to quantum dot LEDs (QD-LEDs) and QR-LEDs. QD-LEDs offer superior color purity (color vividness) and higher brightness compared to current mainstream LEDs. However, outcoupling efficiency has now become the primary obstacle, as it sets a fundamental ceiling for external quantum efficiency (EQE), thereby hindering any further performance improvements.
